Ohio Gov. John Kasich enters crowded GOP presidential field

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Governor John Kasich is the latest entry into the 2016 Republican presidential race.

The outspoken swing-state governor declared his candidacy Tuesday at the Ohio State University student union. He told a crowd of 2,000: "The sun is going to rise to the zenith in America again."

Kasich says that despite all the competitors, he's the only one with experience in three broad areas of political leadership - the federal budget, national security and state government. In his speech, he promised - among other things - to strengthen the military, create jobs and balance the federal budget:

In a more abstract sense, Kasich promised to tame bureaucracy, restore personal responsibility and bring common sense, teamwork and empathy to the national stage. The governor pointed to his track record in Ohio as evidence of his successes and as an outline for improving the United States:

He's the 16th notable Republican to join the bustling contest for the nomination. Kasich, who has little name recognition in the crowded GOP field, is stumping in New Hampshire, South Carolina, Iowa and Michigan this week.
